The METAR remarks note occasional lightning in-cloud and cloud-to-ground to the east and southwest through northwest, with cumulonimbus distant east and southwest through northwest, and showers distant northeast through southeast. VFR at the field currently, but convective activity is surrounding the airport.

TAF group valid at estimated arrival 23:20Z (FM291900 group): winds 240°/10 kt, visibility greater than 6 SM, scattered clouds at 9,000 ft. Do not depart before the corridor is explicitly clear in current convective products.

  1. Before engine start: Pull current WSTs from aviationweather.gov, confirm both 69C and 70C have been superseded and the corridor is depicted clear. Confirm CWA ZAB-103 is expired and not reissued. Check TFR NOTAM 6/9111 routing and confirm your filed route is lateral-clear or cleared through. Check tfr.faa.gov and FSS for any new TFR activity.

  5. Alternate planning: Identify a suitable alternate with genuine weather separation — Santa Fe (KSAF) is the primary candidate. Verify approach availability and forecast in the Chart Supplement.   6. En route radar: Use Flight Service or ATC (workload permitting) for updates. Do not use cockpit datalink NEXRAD to navigate between cells — datalink can be 15–20+ minutes older than its displayed age. Maintain a minimum of 20 nm lateral separation from all convective cells. If ATC vectors bring you closer, say no and request an alternate routing.
  7. Density altitude at KPUB: ~7,651 ft at departure. Use full-length Runway 08R/26L (10,498 ft) for any performance-limited departure scenario. KPUB has high-volume DA-20 training traffic SR–SS Mon–Fri; be alert for pattern traffic.
  8. KABQ Class C: Establish two-way communication with ABQ Approach before entering the Class C shelf (floor 6,900 ft, top 9,400 ft) on descent. Your IFR routing with ATC will handle this; confirm Class C entry coordination is in your clearance.
  9. KABQ density altitude at arrival: ~8,599 ft. Plan landing distance accordingly on the long runway.

this afternoon and especially this evening. Brief periods of
heavy rain and strong gusty outflow winds will be likely with
the storms. Otherwise expect VFR conditions and diurnal wind
flow outside of the convective activity.

KALS will also have a chance of brief thunder activity late this
afternoon and early evening.

Scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop through the
afternoon, mainly in and around the high terrain of New Mexico. Any
direct impact to terminals are likely to bring about gusty winds in
excess of 30kts and brief MVFR to IFR visibilities from heavy rain.
Outflow winds are favored to bring about gusty conditions this
afternoon through the central Rio Grande Valley, mainly between 22z
and 02z. One or two storms may become strong to severe across
northeast NM this afternoon and early evening, capable of strong
winds and hail. Thunderstorm chances dwindle by 03z, with lingering
showers persisting to 06z. Light winds are expected throughout the
overnight hours and into tomorrow morning.
